Air conditioning installation cost in the UK depends on the rooms being served, equipment specified and work needed to fit it. The total should account for indoor and outdoor units, pipe routes, condensate drainage, electrical provision, access and commissioning. Compare written quotations for the same design and scope; an equipment-only price is not the full installed cost.
How much should you budget?
There is no verified national price range or fixed installation tariff in this guide. A meaningful budget needs a defined brief and an assessment of the property. Ask whether an initial figure is a guide estimate or a fixed quotation based on a surveyed installation.
Start with the rooms you want to cool, their use and the times they become uncomfortable. Provide dimensions, photographs and any restrictions you already know about. Explain whether you also want the proposed equipment to provide heating.
Ask the installer to explain the selected capacity and layout. Floor area alone should not be treated as a complete specification: glazing, sun exposure, occupancy and the way rooms are used are useful information for the assessment.

How does the system choice affect the quote?
A single-room installation
A single-split arrangement serves one indoor unit from one outdoor unit. Even for one room, the quote needs to cover the full route between units, drainage and electrical requirements. Do not assume every bedroom installation has the same scope.
Several rooms
Ask whether the proposal uses multiple individual systems or a multi-split arrangement. Request the indoor-unit schedule and the assumptions about simultaneous use. One outdoor unit does not automatically make a multi-room proposal the cheapest option.
Concealed or ducted equipment
If a concealed solution is proposed, clarify the ceiling space, duct routes, access for maintenance and finishing work. Request a complete scope before comparing it with visible wall-mounted units.

Ask specifically about electrical alterations, condensate pumps, brackets or bases, access equipment, parking and disposal of old equipment. Confirm who seals wall penetrations and whether redecorating is included.
Before committing to the layout, check any necessary planning, listed-building, leaseholder, freeholder or landlord approvals with the relevant authority or property manager. Do not assume that permission for one property applies to another, or that the installer will obtain approvals unless this is agreed.
For equipment containing F gas, GOV.UK requires appropriate qualifications for installation and other regulated refrigerant work. Ask the contractor to confirm the relevant individual qualifications and any required company certification. Refrigerant work is not a suitable DIY saving.
Keep optional upgrades separate from essential installation work. For example, ask whether a proposed control upgrade changes the equipment price, wiring requirement or commissioning scope.
How should you compare installation quotations?
Rochford District Council's contractor guidance recommends giving contractors the same work to price, clarifying VAT and agreeing additional work in writing. Apply that approach to the room brief and equipment schedule.
If one quote is lower, ask which specification or scope difference explains it. Do not assume that the shortest installation time, largest capacity or longest advertised warranty is the best fit.
Agree what happens if the survey or installation reveals an unexpected obstacle. Obtain the revised scope and price before approving additional work.
What should you budget for after installation?
Keep the purchase-and-installation budget separate from electricity, servicing and possible future repairs. Ask for any running-cost illustration to state the tariff, hours of use, operating conditions and equipment assumptions; it is not a guaranteed bill.
