If your radiator is not heating up, the problem is usually linked to trapped air, sludge, poor water flow, a valve fault or a wider central heating issue. Sometimes the radiator stays fully cold, and sometimes it gets warm at the top but cold at the bottom.
A radiator cold in one area can show where the issue is. A cold top often points to air inside the radiator. A cold bottom may suggest sludge or debris blocking circulation.
- Radiator cold at the top can mean trapped air.
- Radiator cold at the bottom can mean sludge build-up.
- A fully cold radiator may have a valve or circulation problem.

2. Why Is One Radiator Not Working?

If one radiator is not working but the others are hot, the fault is usually local to that radiator. It may be caused by a stuck thermostatic valve, a closed lockshield valve, trapped air or a blockage in the radiator.
- Check the thermostatic radiator valve is open.
- Make sure the lockshield valve has not been closed.
- Bleed the radiator if the top is cold.
- Book a check if the radiator still does not get hot.

3. Could Air or Sludge Stop a Radiator Getting Hot?

Yes. Air and sludge are two common reasons a radiator is not getting hot. Air collects inside the radiator and stops hot water reaching every part. Sludge builds up over time and restricts water flow through the system.
- Gurgling sounds can suggest air in the radiator.
- Cold patches can suggest poor circulation.
- Black water when bleeding may suggest sludge.
- Repeated cold spots may mean the system needs professional cleaning.

4. Can a Valve Cause a Radiator to Stay Cold?

- The thermostatic valve may be stuck closed.
- The lockshield valve may need adjustment.
- The radiator may need balancing with the rest of the system.
- A damaged valve may need replacing by an engineer.
